Strings (version française)

The string teaching staff at Université de Montréal's Faculty of Music perfectly reflects the rich traditions that exist within our institution.

The team brings together exceptional professors and performers trained in Russia, Austria, England, France, Switzerland, Canada and the United States. This variety of approaches and styles opens students' minds to a vast range of musical perspectives, preparing them for the complex realities of the professional music scene at home and abroad.

In addition to personalized teaching provided by these well-known masters, string students have the opportunity to experience ensemble music in all its diversity within the Orchestre de l'Université de Montréal, the Ensemble de musique contemporaine, the Atelier de musique baroque, and numerous string quartets and chamber music groups.

Training tailored to the professional milieu

Whether as soloists, chamber music artists or orchestra musicians, string students will immerse themselves in cutting-edge practical and theoretical learning, enriched by their participation in numerous concerts.

To become accustomed to on-stage experience, Faculty students perform each year in the more than 600 events presented in our three concert halls, among them the Salle Claude-Champagne, renowned for half a century as a first-rate performance and creation space.

Our string students' performance potential is also encouraged through the regular participation in master classes, and the chance to test their limits in competitions within the Faculty as well as nationally and internationally. Each year, the Orchestre de l'Université de Montréal Concerto Competition crowns three winners, who go on to perform in concert with the orchestra.

The Orchestre de l'Université de Montréal's 80 musicians are conducted by Jean-François Rivest, a violinist by training who today is one of Canada's most active orchestra leaders. Known for his passionate style and rigorous approach, Maestro Rivest galvanizes the talent of student performers, drawing unique quality out of each performance.

Our graduates' presence within many internationally renowned orchestras speaks to the quality of our programs at every level of university study.

Scholarships, exchange programs and prestigious guests

At the Faculty of Music, string students can benefit from exchange programs with major music educational institutions in Europe and North America: the Vienna Conservatory (Austria), the Conservatoire de Lyon (France), the Cleveland Institute of Music (U.S.), and the UBC School of Music (Canada).
